News The Protocol Nobody’s Upselling You

The Sleep Series, Part 4 of 5: why the most powerful sleep habit is free.

Written by Annette Scott, Revivery co-founder and lead instructor.

We’d be delighted if the answer to better sleep were simply this: Sauna more.

It would certainly suit our business. Unfortunately, biology refuses to take direction from our marketing department.

What sauna can and can’t do

Sauna may help set the stage for sleep. It can offer a thermal cue, a clear transition out of the day, and a ritual you can put on repeat. But we’d be bold-faced liars if we claimed it could make up for a sleep schedule that’s all over the map.

No amount of sauna can undo a week of bed at midnight on Tuesday, 10:00 on Wednesday, and 2:00 on Saturday, then sleeping in until 11:00 on Sunday, only to wonder why Monday feels like you just flew home from Europe.

Sauna is an amplifier, not an alibi. And beneath all these beautiful practices lies something profoundly unsexy:

The free protocol

Consistency. Every mechanism we’ve explored in this series points to an intervention that costs nothing at all: a steady wake time, weekends included.

Not a supplement stack. Not a sleep tracker subscription. Not a new mattress.

If you can only control one end of your night, wake time is a powerful place to begin, because it hands your circadian system an anchor it can count on. Morning light then adds a second strong signal that keeps that internal clock in step.

Choose a wake time you can realistically keep, within a fairly narrow window, most days. Step outside into the light soon after you rise. And try not to let Saturday and Sunday drift into another time zone.

Then layer the lovely things

Then layer the lovely things on top.

Sauna.

Breathwork.

A dark bedroom.

A good book and a cup of tea.

Whatever helps your particular Earthling nervous system hear the message: We’re done for today.

None of this means rituals don’t matter.

They do.

They simply work best when they’re reinforcing a rhythm, not trying to rescue you from the lack of one.

Try this week

  • One wake time, seven days. Pick a time you can hold, weekends included, and keep it all week.
  • Get outside light soon after you get up.
  • Let an evening sauna tell your body the day is done. Book an evening session
